New York Wild Horse “Adoptions”

August 31, 2009

I have just got off the phone with a Rebecca Chase of the BLM. I called her to ask how these NY “adoptions” went.

She informed me that the “adoptions” went “very well,” adding that 47 out of the 60 WH&B were “adopted.”

I expressed my fear to her that since there are alot of known kill-buyers in NYS, I asked as to whether or not she knew if any killbuyers wound up “adopting” any of these horses. She said she didnt know. I then asked her if the public was entitled to know who the adoptors were. She said that that information was not generally made known to the public. I then asked her if she knew if that info was discloseable under the Freedom of Information Laws and again she said she didnt know.”

I then asked her where the horses were that were not adopted and she told me they were moved to a holding facility in Ill. She also informed me that there were approximately 100 WH in that facility.

I asked her if it was not too late to adopt some of these 100 horses and she said “no,” that they are still available for adoption. I asked if there was a website where I could find more info out about these “available” horses or to see some pics and she promiced to send me a link.
When I get it, I will post it here. Also, I am going to do a FOIL request to see if I can find out who the adoptors are.
I am willing to bet that New Yorks most notorious killbuyers (The Don Nickersons) wound up with a majority of these horses. If not him, then someother killbuyer might have got them and I am determined to find out if so and who.

I also called Cornell University in Ithica NY which is where they had the “adoption” clinic and spoke to a woman named Genny Grove who is the manager of the Equestrian Center and who oversees the BLMs “adoption” clinics (which happens there at the college “every other year.”)

I asked how the “adoptions” went and she also told me “very well.” I also asked her if she knew (by any chance) who any of the adoptors were and she said “no.”

I then I relayed to her my fear that some of these horses may have went to killbuyers, and she said, “Oh no, there is no way killbuyers can “adopt” these horses,…explaining to me that the adoptors must keep the horses for their own use.” I told her that I was aware of the “one year”  stipulation in the BLM “adoption” contract,  but that I also was aware of the fact that not all of the “adoptors” actually did that. Again, she related to me her belief that no BLM horses would ever go to slaughter. She told me of her own personal knowledge of a case where an “adoptor” tried to bring some BLM horses to an auction but that the auction house would not accept them.  She used this example  as “proof” that wild horses dont go to slaughter!
How nieve this gal is to the realities of BLM ”adoptions .”

I then asked her about the “adopters” that dont get caught bringing their “adopted” horses to auction, or even directly to the slaughterhouses,  and she got all huffy with me and stated that she is not going to debate the issue with me any longer and promptly (and rudely) hung up.
Here is the number to Cornell Universitys’ Equestrian Center where you can call Ms. Grove up and let her know your feelings about the “safety” of  horses placed through BLMs ”adoption” program. (607) 272 – 0150 You might also tell her that it is not nice to hang up on people when they are not being rude or dis-respectful.

Stay tuned to this station for updates on who are these  New York Adoptors. .
